Dual Diagnosis Suffering a mental illness affects every area of your life. If you couple that mental health disorder with substance abuse or addiction, the problems only grow worse. But Beaches Recovery’s dual diagnosis treatment center in Jacksonville, Florida, provides help for both of your problems at once. At Beaches Recovery, you end the cycle of mental health problems and addiction through the right treatment in the right place at the right time. We strongly believe in helping our patients find solutions to the underlying core mental health challenges they face. It is rare for patients to enter into our treatment programs without experiencing some type of untreated anxiety, depression, or mania. Some have a history of extensive trauma accompanied by PTSD and need a safe place to recover with the assistance of modalities such as, EMDR. Our staff is highly effective at customizing a tailored plan that fits each patient's individual need based on bio-psychosocial testing offered at the beginning of patient care. We offer genetic testing for those patients who have experienced a history of resistance to other treatment methods and medications to ensure we find the right fit. Our team is dedicated to providing education, resources and aftercare support to remove the barriers people encounter that may impede upon the success of the recovery process. Dual diagnosis treatment is treatment addressing both addiction and co-occurring mental health issues such as: Anxiety- Anxiety disorders cause individuals to experience high levels of fear, panic, and worry. While some instances might begin by a trigger, other instances occur for no reason at all. Symptoms of anxiety can negatively impact all aspects of an individual’s life. Depression- Depression is a mood disorder that causes individuals to experience overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and despair. These periods of sadness last for at least two weeks at a time and can turn into physical symptoms as well. Bipolar disorder- This mood disorder tends to include periods of mania followed by periods of depression. These changes are extreme and include shifts in energy levels, activity levels, and overall mood. Schizophrenia- This is a severe disorder that can impact the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors of the individual. They often lose touch with reality and can experience hallucinations, problems with their memory, and an inability to focus. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)- PTSD is most often associated with veterans of war, but can occur in anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. Symptoms are often a combination of avoidance actions, mood changes, and re-experiencing symptoms, such as flashbacks. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)- This disorder is when an individual experiences uncontrollable thoughts and behaviors that must occur repeatedly. These compulsions and obsessive thoughts can negatively affect the life of the individual and can make everyday tasks almost impossible. In order for patients to heal from a dual diagnosis, therapists treat both co-occurring conditions. Research indicates that this treatment works best for co-occurring mental disorders. Dual diagnosis is common in addiction. It’s not an issue to be ashamed of, and it’s not one to ignore. By knowing that co-occurring disorders exist, it’s possible to gain more effective treatment for all aspects of the addiction. When co-occurring disorders receive therapy as part of a dual diagnosis treatment program, a better chance for long-term sobriety results.
Family Programs Family support is a crucial part of your journey to sobriety. Addiction and mental health issues affect not only the family member in need of rehabilitation but the rest of the family members as well. At Beaches Recovery’s drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, your family is our family. In each of our 30, 60 or 90-day drug and alcohol treatment programs, we work diligently to educate family members on the many different elements of addictive behavior, as well as work to mend the brokenness in families that contribute to addictive tendencies. Involving families in the recovery process helps both the patient and the family members become aware of familial patterns, unhealthy relationships/expectations, responsible behavior and deep-rooted feelings from both sides. Through this process, healing happens for both the family members and the addict. From there new, positive, healthy habits, relationships and patterns can be formed. Family Therapy Options: Many family members want to love and support those who struggle with addiction. Good intentions, however, sometimes manifest themselves as enabling behavior. One of the key focuses of family support therapy is how individuals can express their love and support without enabling their loved ones. An addiction treatment program offers different types of family support for recovery, such as: Experiential therapy Anger management Support groups Holistic treatment and activities Psychological & psychiatric care Individual counseling for each member of the family Members of the family are encouraged to participate in individual and family activities. Different types of family support therapy help the family spend time together. You can address issues and find family support solutions to helping the addicted person overcome substance abuse. In most cases, a therapist works directly with the family to address issues and find solutions for working together. The more professional support your family gets, the higher your chances of lifelong recovery.
Medication Assisted Treatment There are many facets of addiction treatment that warrant explanation. After all, the entire treatment process is unknown to a lot of people. With that said, we want to address something that one might consider confusing. That is the use of drugs to combat drug addiction. That’s correct. Sometimes, doctors and medical staff have to use prescription medications to help people get through detox and treatment. We call this medication-assisted treatment. The most difficult part of recovering from a substance abuse problem, addiction or alcoholism is detox. When you are physically addicted to drugs or alcohol, you experience painful, uncomfortable and potentially life-threatening withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop using. Drugs and alcohol cause different withdrawal symptoms but are serious enough to make it hard to complete detox without assistance. Detox medications are used in medication-assisted treatment to diminish and reduce the severity of your withdrawal symptoms. During early recovery, cravings for your substance of choice magnify because of changes addiction causes to your brain’s pleasure and reward center. Complex changes to your brain chemistry make it very difficult to quit using drugs or alcohol without treatment. What makes Beaches Recovery different from other treatment centers? It is our individualized approach to patients. We want to get treatment right the first time. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery and a life lived in sobriety. Therefore, what works for one person may not work for all. At Beaches we offer patients options to meet their needs. With the help of our medical and clinical team we provide people with different options for medication-assisted treatment and maintenance. Customized recovery is successful recovery.
